Connections
The Port of Cleveland is the first major U.S. port of call on the Great Lakes. Acting as a gateway to major Midwest markets — such as Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Chicago — the Port of Cleveland connects 1/2 of all U.S. households, businesses and manufacturing plants within an 8-hour drive of the port. Also, the Port provides strategic advantages for partners through ease of access, ample capacity and lack of congestion allowing partners to save up to 10 days on door-to-door transit via the St. Lawrence Seaway compared to coastal port routings.
The Port is serviced by two Class 1 Railroads: CSX & Norfolk Southern. All on-dock switching services are performed by Cleveland Port Railroad, a subsidiary of OmniTRAX.
From the Port’s main gate on West 3rd Street, trucks have immediate access to State Route 2 and I-90. Quick access to I-77 and I- 71 are minutes away; The Ohio Turnpike (80) is 25 miles away.
The Port of Cleveland’s general cargo terminal is located at 775 Erieside Ave, Cleveland, OH 44113. The general cargo terminal can be accessed directly by following State Route 2 westbound to Exit #195B West 3rd Street. When exiting follow the Port of Cleveland sign (stay to the left) and proceed directly to our main gate. TWIC holders may use the far-right entrance. All others should use the Visitor’s entrance. Security
As a waterfront facility, the Port of Cleveland has a security plan and a security force that works around the clock to ensure the safety of visiting vessels, dock workers and port facilities.
Our security plan is based on U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Coast Guard requirements, and we work in a partnership with federal agencies to ensure compliance. The Coast Guard enforces the plan by patrolling adjacent water and inspecting Port facilities. U.S. Customs and Border Protection boards every ship docked at the Port, checks the identification of crew members, conducts necessary background checks, verifies shipments, and examines vessels for any suspicious or potentially dangerous cargo, such as narcotics, weapons, or stowaways.
The Port’s security force patrols the facility and monitors vessels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A network of cameras on the property are also monitored 24/7. Entry into the Port is limited to individuals who hold a federal Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Entry for those without a TWIC credential can be provided by a Port escort for $80/hour, with a $80 minimum beginning April 1 , 2023. Credit/Debit Card or Commercial Check accepted.
