Great Lakes Cruising
Cruising History to Date
The Port of Cleveland has been a cornerstone of the region’s maritime economy since its establishment in 1968, serving as a vital link between the Great Lakes and global commerce. In 2017, the Port expanded its legacy by welcoming its first modern cruise ship, marking the beginning of Cleveland’s emergence as a Great Lakes cruise destination. Since then, continued investment in port infrastructure, including a dedicated U.S. Customs facility, has strengthened the Port’s ability to safely and efficiently support passenger vessels.

Cleveland’s cruise sector has grown rapidly, fueled by increased interest in Great Lakes travel and the city’s vibrant waterfront. In 2025, the Port closed its most successful season yet: 53 cruise ship calls and 8,700 passengers, generating an estimated $1.3 million in direct visitor spending and more than $2 million in total economic impact. Visitors stepping off ships are greeted with immediate access to world-class museums, cultural attractions, restaurants, and neighborhoods — contributing real dollars to local businesses and reinforcing Cleveland’s appeal as a welcoming, world-class destination.
Today, Cleveland is recognized nationally as one of North America’s hottest new cruise spots, and demand continues to rise. With additional cruise lines expanding Great Lakes itineraries in 2026 — including new U.S.-only routes — the Port expects continued momentum. As cruising grows alongside the Port’s core cargo operations, it reflects a forward-looking vision: leveraging Cleveland’s waterfront, maritime heritage, and community partnerships to support economic vitality and showcase the best of Northeast Ohio.
