Eagle Scout Tyler Waryk creates port model

Posted 9-29-09 by Luke Frazier
The Port recently received the most incredible model of the new maritime Port built by Eagle Scout candidate Tyler Waryk and a host of other scouts. As the pictures below show, the sheer amount of detail, planning and quality construction of the model is impressive, to say the least. Hundreds of hours went into the planning and construction of this model, and Tyler’s dad was a big part of the coordination too, as was Mark Filippell, an Eagle Scout advisor.
"Migration Mania" on Dike 14

Posted 9-28-09 by Pam Davis
"Migration Mania” at Dike 14 on Saturday was a big success until the skies opened up. The Dike 14 Environmental Education Collaborative hosted the guided tours of Cleveland’s Lakefront Nature Preserve until the rain, thunder, lightning and muddy conditions called a halt to the activities.

Many of the scientists that study life on the Dike were available to answer detailed questions. Visitors had a chance to meet Jim McCormac, an author, columnist and president of the Ohio Ornithological Society, as well as Andy Jones, Dave Grasskemper, Nancy Howell, Wendy Weirich, Susan Gallagher and additional members of the Collaborative. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History was also on hand providing up close looks at a few of the critters and birds who call the museum home, including a Barred Owl and an Opossum. For more information on Dike 14 visit www.portofcleveland.com
Mayor Jackson hosts Goodtime III cruise

Posted 9/10/09 by Luke Frazier & Adam Wasserman
Excellent boat trip last night with the Mayor and almost 500 people aboard the Goodtime III. The cruise highlighted the various developments currently underway along North Coast Harbor, Port docks, the old Coast Guard station at Whiskey Island and other river sites. It was most gratifying to hear the Mayor so enthusiastically support the port’s relocation and development efforts, explaining how the decision to have Burke airport remain open is tied to the port relocating eastward. Crain’s Cleveland Business did a nice piece this morning about the trip, http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20090910/FREE/909109982
August 13th Community Meeting at St. Ignatius

Posted 8/24/09 by Linda Sternheimer
We had a great turn out and a lot of input at the community meeting last week held 8/13 at St. Ignatius High School. The plan will continue to adjust and reflect the feedback we receive. Great progress on refining the vision has been made since the July 9th presentation. Please check out the slide show which is available for downloading on our website (under News and Highlights—homepage).
Leadership Cleveland Alumni breakfast

Posted 8/18/09 by Luke Frazier
We had an excellent briefing this morning about downtown waterfront development for about 85 Cleveland Leadership Center alumni. Our CEO Adam Wassermann and Jill Akins, an architect that is part of the design team, talked about the interconnectedness of the waterfront, maritime business growth, port relocation and the development of a trade district near the proposed new port. Great questions and comments, and there are plans to conduct two more educational briefings about port operations. The next one is scheduled for October 15 and will focus on port relocation and maritime business.
U.S. Coast Guard on Dike 14

Posted 8/7/09 by Pam Davis
Activity on Dike 14: On July 29th, the U.S. Coast Guard was on Dike 14 performing routine (every 2 years) on the navigation lights (at the "beak" and on the north shore). It was a hot and humid day that was literally buzzing with mosquitoes. The vegetation - native, but mostly invasive - has grown since my last visit. It's taller than I am, even taller than the "Coasties'" maintenance vehicle. The Coast Guard may be back this fall to replace the navigation light poles. I'll keep you posted.
Port partners with Leadership Cleveland Center

Posted 8/5/09 by Adam Wasserman
We are very excited to join with the Cleveland Leadership Center as a part of our strategy to engage civic leaders in our efforts. The recent MOU we’ve signed with them confirms that we know we have to be collaborative—it’s the only way we’ll be successful. We see this partnership as a model for other ways in which we will engage our community.

We believe that our port’s assets and knowledge can leverage resources for the region and our state—Ohio can be a world-class business place with international connections through the Port of Cleveland. We want to do great things for and with the community.
A Water Super-Highway Turns 50

Posted 8/4/09 by Luke Frazier
Check out this column from the Jamaica Observer (?!) commemorating the St. Lawrence Seaway—so important to us in Cleveland and the Great Lakes. The recent MOU the Port of Cleveland signed with the Port of Halifax demonstrates our commitment to grow maritime business down the Seaway from the deep water ports in Nova Scotia and bring cargo to Cleveland. The marvel known as the Seaway is part of our competitive advantage.

A WATER SUPER-HIGHWAY TURNS 50
KEEBLE McFARLANE
Saturday, August 01, 2009
Queen Elizabeth called it "One of the outstanding engineering accomplishments of modern times" and for President Eisenhower of the US it was "a magnificent symbol of the achievements possible to democratic nations peacefully working together for the common good". The young queen and the old warrior-turned-politician were sharing the stage to declare open the longest inland waterway in the world.

It was June 26, 1959, and the Cold War was at its height, as you can discern from Eisenhower's remarks. The Seaway was, indeed, an achievement, as well as an example to architects, engineers and builders of today. It stretches just over 300 kilometres - four times the length of the Panama Canal - and links the long-established port of Montreal with Lake Ontario, and by virtue of that, with ports along the Great Lakes all the way to Thunder Bay and Duluth, on the western shore of Lake Superior.

The project took a little less than five years, employing 22,000 construction workers who blasted and moved 147 million cubic metres of hard rock and earth, dredged long stretches of the St Lawrence River, poured more than four million cubic metres of concrete to erect dams, canals and locks and moved whole villages and towns. The waterway cost almost US$470 million, coming in under budget and ahead of time. The hydro dams built by the New York Power Authority and the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario (later known as Ontario Hydro and now Ontario Power Generation) cost another US$530 million.

FOR THE REST OF THE STORY: http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/columns/html/20090731T200000-0500_156480_OBS_A_WATER_SUPER_HIGHWAY_TURNS___.asp
